Pumpkin Picking!

Oh hi there! Me again sharing yet another pumpkin related activity. I just can’t seem to stop buying the decorative pumpkins from the florists here in Vienna but rest assured, they are being put to excellent use for dramatic play and activities. Our latest being this uppercase / lowercase match.

You will need:

  • Pumpkin
  • Alphabet stickers (upper and lowercase)
  • Black marker
  • Card (we used the back of an old gift box)
  • Tray – optional

What to do:

  1. Place stickers randomly on the pumpkin
  2. Write the alphabet in upper and lower on the piece of card.
  3. Invite your little one to match the letters they peel to the ones written on the card. With Z (3.8), I said the letters with her as she peeled them off the pumpkin.

Key Benefits:

  • Sensory play:hands-on activities such as this help develop the brain’s neural pathways. It helps that little ones can feel the letters rather than just see them on the page of a worksheet.
  • Hand-eye coordination: the stickers are small so it takes a lot of concentration to pick them up and put them in the right place.
  • Fine motor skills and hand-strength: using pincer grip to collect the stickers
  • Early literacy: recognising letters (you could also try the same with number recognition)

Like it? Pin it!

If you want to try this activity at a later date, I’ve created this handy graphic so you can pop it on Pinterest!

Age recommendations

Z is now 3.10 years old and this activity was more of a challenge for her – when we repeat this activity again in the future, we will do lowercase only. Other ways to adapt would include; name recognition (just using the letters in your child’s name), phonics, spelling words or numbers.

We actually did this activity over a couple of days, revisiting it as our morning activity. I never pressure Z to complete a task – she is only small and I want to keep the learning fun for her.
