A fun sensory art session for little learners

We all know that pumpkin decorating can get a little… well competitive. Whilst there are some truly awesome creations out there, most would be impossible for a little one to achieve. Here is one of the simplest ways to decorate a pumpkin for all of you with little learners out there…

  • Carving pumpkin
  • Non-toxic acrylics or washable paints – just make sure anything you choose is non-toxic!
  • Supply of painting tools. e.g. sponges, brushes and rollers
  • Large tray
  • wipes / wet cloths

This activity was something that I actually set up for my eldest when he was on a play date last year. I’d bought carving pumpkins for the occasion and rather than faff around with knives to carve, decided to go down the route of decorating with paint.

Age Recommendations

The beauty of this activity is that you can do it with a wide range of age groups. In this photo, Z was around 2.8 years and the boys were 9. So long as the paints you use are non-toxic, you could try this activity from around the age of 18 months, providing that your child is past the ‘mouth all the things’ stage.

Key Benefits

Process art is hugely beneficial because it truly allows little learners to explore the materials on offer. There is no set task or intended end result so the children can really get stuck in!

Process art allows children to develop the creative side of their brains through the medium of sensory play.
