A fun sensory activity for preschoolers

This whole sensory activity was inspired by the ‘treasure chest’ egg carton! Z (3.6 years) really loves to say ‘x marks the spot’ so we’ve gone slightly pirate themed …

Egg Carton Treasure Chest

It all started with the egg carton. For this you will need:

  • A small half-dozen sized egg carton
  • Paint in white and gold
  • Glitter – ideally eco-glitter
  • Sequins
  • Paintbrushes
  • Glue
  • Paint tray

Z started off by painting the egg carton white. Once that was dry, she coated over the base layer in gold. Once both coats were dry, she decorated with sequins and glitter.

As always with our crafts, Z had full control over the glue, paint and glitter. Over time, she has become careful with amounts and doesn’t generally waste any materials by going over the top!

Treasure themed sensory tray:

Once treasure chest was completed, it became a question of what to do with it. I had dyed some rice gold which had been a massive fail (it looks like brown rice, right?) but it did look beachy enough for this themed tray. I also added some gemstones, buttons and sequins to act as the treasure.

Z used large tweezers to capture the treasure and placed them into the wooden tray pictured below. Originally she was going to sort them by colour, but that aspect didn’t last long!

The big kid (who was on summer break) even got involved after a while. He is still mildly into Minecraft so categorising the gemstones certainly appealed to him.

Key Learning

  • Creative process – creating the egg carton treasure box
  • Fine motor skills
  • Categorising and sorting

Age Recommendation

This is suitable for children aged 3+. Please be aware that the gemstones and buttons do present a choking hazard so the activity should be done under close supervision.
