An activity for curious tabies

Have you got a curious taby at home? It can be kind of difficult to entertain them when they are constantly getting into things, but this ‘free the animals’ activity should keep them occupied for a while! As with most of our activities, you don’t need many resources for this…

You will need:

  • A deep baking dish (or similar)
  • Elastic bands
  • Animals

What to do:

Simply place the animals (or similar chunky object) inside the baking dish, then wrap elastic bands over the top. Start off easy with just a few elastic bands, adding more once your taby has mastered the activity.

Benefits

  • Problem solving (figuring out how to rescue the animals)
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Fine motor skills
  • Language Development

Age recommendations

Baby E was 15 months when we did this activity although you could start it from 12 months. As always, modify for your baby. You want a nice level of challenge – too easy and they grow bored quickly, too difficult and they will likely cry in frustration. Find the middle point that suits your child.

To make it easier: fewer elastic bands and chunky objects

To make it harder: add smaller objects and more bands – you could even try using chunky tweezers with older children.
